Flood Prevention Barriers
Floods reflect one of the largest natural calamities that has plagued human race for centuries. Be it the destruction of properties or destruction of life, flooding has affected the human race a lot. Thailand suffered $40 billion destruction in 2011 due to flooding. China suffered$30 billion damage in 1998. USA and India have also suffered from severe flooding.
Apart from destruction of property, lives have been lost too. China suffered the worst of these man-killing natural disasters. The highest ever recorded number of lives lost was in the year 1931 in China. A total of 37, 00,000 people lost their lives in China in 1931 due to flooding.
How to prevent flooding?
Although, natural destructions can come in all sizes, there are certain measures that can protect against the destruction caused by floods. This engineering solution is known as Flood Prevention Barriers. These are a special kind of floodgates that protect the area that is behind these barriers. They can defend the areas behind them from Spring tides and storm surges. Flood Barriers are usually a single component of a multi- component system that, working together helps deal with floods. Levees, flood walls, other geographical features and other constructions make up other components of Flood Barriers.
Flood Barriers are available at singular scale as well. These barriers protect individual buildings from getting flooded. They keep flood waters at bay and protect the buildings that are surrounded by them.
Kinds of Flood Preventing Barriers
There are several kinds of Flood Prevention Barriers. Some of them are:
• Removable Flood Barriers: As the name suggests, these flood preventing barriers have the advantage of being removed when not in use. These can be used to provide protection up to 4 metres.
• Glass Flood Barriers: The name is suggestive of the material that is used in these flood barriers. High strength structural glass is used in these barriers. They can withstand both static and impact forces. These gates are water-tight impact resistant. There is no operational cost associated with these barriers. These barriers provide protection yet do not intrude into the visual aspect of the building.
• Flip-Up Flood Barriers: These flood barriers for a part of the ground when not in use. This enables people and vehicles to pass over them unrestricted. When in need, they can be activated by a button or by sensors or manually. They can vary in lengths from 2metres up to 12 metres.
