What are the Requirements You Need to Fulfil for the Eligibility to Study in India?

India, which is recognized for having one of the best education systems in the world, has about 30 million students from different countries opting for various courses in different universities. Some of the prominent courses students choose are social sciences, humanities, arts, science, technology, engineering, commerce, medicine, law, and dentistry.

Universities and colleges in India usually have their academic year starting in July or August and ending in May or June. Each student visa given to overseas students in India allows for multiple entries, making it easier for them to travel home for the holidays and return to school the following semester. A letter of permission from the specific Indian university or college where a foreign student has been taken up to study is needed for the visa application.

Such students have the eligibility to study in India only for those particular number of years allowed under the student visa terms. International students, however, are given a provisional visa for a three-month period during which they can apply for admission to various Indian colleges. Moreover, for their student visas to be approved, international students should also provide documentation of their financial situation.

Eligibility Criteria for International Students to Study in India

  • For international students to be eligible to study in an Indian university or college and start the admissions process, they must have undergone 12 years of formal education. This begins with submitting their 10+2 grade report.
  • The next step is for international students to apply to private universities in India as there is no direct admission option available at government-run universities. Yet, there are quotas reserved in the BDS and MBBS programmes for students of Asian, Latin American, and African descent.
  • However, while applying to enrol in private schools and universities in India, international students are not required to take the same entrance exams that Indian students are.
  • Finally, international students should have a graduation degree from a recognised institution that is similar to the normal 3 to 4-year graduation degree in India to pursue postgraduate studies in an Indian university.

For students who desire to pursue short-term normal or specialised courses, diploma programmes are also available. The bare minimum for enrolling in certificate or diploma courses is a 10+2 level of education. Several fields like Indian Music & Dance, Yoga and Naturopathy, Indian Cuisines, Buddhist Studies, computer programming, etc., provide diploma- or certificate-based courses and these courses are offered for a duration that varies from one institute to another.

It is advisable to ensure that you meet the requirements for eligibility to study in India before opting for a course or university.
