With the use of proper roof materials, it can offer insulation in the cold months of winter or can reflect the sun light and keep the house cool in the hot summer months.

There is more to the roof than just the pretty tiles or metals sheets. Without a proper structure, no roofing material can go to the roof. The roofing structure is the backbone or frame on which the roof is constructed on. Whenever a home is under construction, a lumber is connected on top of the housing structure. It consists of a series of beams, trusses, and rafters.  This structure gives the roof its shape.  You need this structure to lay the roof sheathing.

Generally, the type of roofing structure that will go on the commercial building or home is decided before the construction. The choice of material depends on the types of home, type of roof covering that will be used and the style or architecture of the building. 

Before the start of construction, you need to decide how you want to use the roof space. In case, you have no intension of using that living space, then you can simply use fink truss system. However, if you decide to have a living space like a loft, then you have to choose other methods. 

If you design cathedral or vaulted roof, then talk to your architect or builder. Some designs need traditional rafters on beams while other demands panelized roofing elements. Apart from the design and style, sometimes, your city and jurisdictional building code needs to be considered. Some cities have specifications on what type of roof structure is required.

Some buildings like concert halls may need special consideration relating to the design of roof and its structure. This is because the roofing structure must support the materials needed to achieve right acoustics.  However, this leads to design complexity, and it becomes an expensive affair.

Choosing a roofing structure is a critical but important task.  Most people demand fire resistance, and the structure must prevent the passage of fire from neighboring roofs or should prevent it from spreading into other parts of the same house or building.
